Bonus Only vs. Deposit Plus Bonus
When a bonus is attached to a deposit, the wagering multiple looks the same on paper but bites very differently depending on what it multiplies. The terms will state the figure: 5×, 10×, 15×, or something else. What they mean is the question.
Example 2 – Deposit plus bonus Same deposit, same bonus, but the terms read “10× wagering on deposit plus bonus.” The calculation changes. That is double the wagering burden for exactly the same headline offer.
The Act does not prescribe a standard formula, so the quantum is entirely a matter of the contract between you and the operator. A higher total staked can increase the long-term house edge against a promotion. In a game with a built‑in return to player below 100%, more staking raises the expected loss, and finishing with a positive balance may become less likely as playthrough increases.
What Must Be Checked Before You Accept
That makes operator licensing the first thing to verify. Next, the fine print. The bonus terms tell you whether the multiple attaches to the bonus alone or to the deposit‑plus‑bonus sum. They also state any game weighting – some versions may count only a fraction of each stake, or exclude certain game types altogether – and the expiry period within which the wagering must be completed.
Age is another absolute. Identity verification under FICA and POPIA applies, and operators must enforce it.
The exact wording of the bonus terms decides the real cost. Nothing compels an operator to use the more generous calculation, so reading the offer letter before you deposit removes the most expensive misunderstanding.
