PayShap Explained
A PayShap payment lands in the recipient’s account within seconds, day or night, and the sender does not need the receiver’s bank account number. It works through a ShapID – a cellphone number a bank customer registers inside their banking app – so the money moves directly from one bank account to another in real time.

How a ShapID payment works
PayShap is a bank-led real-time payment rail rolled out by participating South African banks. The customer opens their bank’s app or cellphone banking, registers a ShapID (which is simply their cellphone number), and that number becomes a receiving address tied to their account. Absa, FNB, Standard Bank, Nedbank and African Bank have all published descriptions that boil down to the same thing: a ShapID is an alias that lets someone receive money without handing out an account number.
To pay, the sender keys in the cellphone number linked to the receiver’s ShapID. The banks’ systems ask for confirmation and push the funds across the interbank PayShap rail. FNB says the service runs 24/7 with no cut-off times. Standard Bank notes that it works even if the other party banks elsewhere. Nedbank calls it a payment method for real-time transactions using an account alias.
The service also has a PayShap Request feature. A payer can respond to a payment request using a cellphone number, a ShapID, or ordinary account details. A PayShap Request page makes it clear that the flexibility works both ways, but the headline promise is still speed and the absence of shared banking details.
How PayShap differs from an ordinary EFT
An ordinary electronic funds transfer between two different South African banks is not instant by default. Nedbank’s published EFT processing times confirm that a payment to another bank can take up to 30 minutes to clear under some conditions, while transfers within the same institution are instantaneous. PayShap, by contrast, is built from the start as a real-time rail: the funds are received within seconds, not minutes or hours. FNB calls it a lower-cost alternative to existing real-time payment channels and says it is being rolled out in phases, so not every client has it yet.
The most visible difference is that a normal EFT requires the receiver’s account number, branch code, and sometimes a reference. A PayShap payment to a ShapID bypasses all of that. The sender only needs the cellphone number. That does not turn it into a card payment gateway. PayShap is still a bank-to-bank transfer, not a card transaction that routes through a payment processor. It clears against the receiver’s linked bank account, not against a card wallet or a voucher.
Instant EFT payment gateways, the kind some online merchants offer, are a different technical path. They typically use screen-scraping or a secure sign-in to initiate a standard EFT payment that the gateway marks as verified while the bank still processes it. PayShap does not need a gateway to pretend the EFT is instant; the payment is instant because the rail itself is.
